This issue will be a continuance of the first aid segment.
1. Povidone-Iodine. Povidone-iodine is an excellent disinfectant that is extremely versatile. It can be used as a surface disinfectant, a wound disinfectant, water purification, etc. This was already pointed out in the second issue. Now, to use povidone-iodine for water purification, apply four (4) drops of it to one (1) liter of water. Allow an hour of contact time before adding vitamin C (to neutralize the iodine) or drinking. One hour contact time is considered effective at any temperature. Less time is needed, the higher the temperature is, but for safety reasons, using the "rule of thumb" of one hour contact time is best.
2. Vitamin C. Vitamin C is commonly known for its ability to boost the immune system. What it is not known for is that it aids in iron absorption (which is essential), reduces the risk of heat stroke/exhaustion, helps regulate body temperature, neutralize the iodine taste of iodine-purified water, and so much more.
3. Snake Bites. When bitten by a snake, one MUST remain calm. Stop, remove the threat if possible, inspect the bite, immediately raise the affected area above the heart to slow the blood flow, begin moving slowly and try to keep the heart rate down if no one is near to aid you. Do NOT use a tourniquet as this will cause more damage. Sucking the venom out has not been proven to work and may endanger the person removing the venom if they are using their mouth. In certain cases, immediate amputation is necessary.
4. White Pine Needles. When made into an herbal tea, white pine needles are a natural antibiotic, cough suppressor, decongestant, etc. White pine needles are basically the equivalent of modern cold medicine. It also helps to boost the immune system but not as effectively as ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
5. Goldenseal Root. Goldenseal root is a natural antibiotic. It can be used to make a topical ointment, an herbal tea, etc. It can also be chewed on to release its juices.
Next week: natural pain killers, natural antiseptics, petroleum jelly, chocolate, and *******.

Survival Tips Issue #8
Welcome to issue eight of Survival Tips. We are still focusing on first aid but will soon expand into other areas.
1. Salts other uses. Salt can be used for many applications. One of the most important is its use as an electrolyte. Salt helps retain water in the body and reduce the risk of dehydration, one of the major concerns in a survival situation. Salt can also be used to preserve food, whether it be meats, fruits, vegetables, etc. By using salt, in collaboration with other methods and/or substances, dehydration, food storage, first aid, and several other aspects of survival are made slightly easier.
2. Splints. When in the bush, a spl

Welcome to issue #7 of the survival tips. This week we will still be dwelling in first aid.
1. Infection. When dealing with infections, there is a lot at stake. If the infection spreads, one can lose their limb, become septic, or worse. Be sure to clear any sign of infection from the wound. Antiseptic, warm, sterilized water, a clean cloth or other material, and, if needed, a cutting tool should be used to flush the wound. In order to do this safely and efficiently (remember supplies are extremely limited), lance the skin covering the wound (if needed), using the warm water (if possible, in a small, squeezable bottle with a small hole in the
Survival Tips Issue #6
This is issue #6. We will be expanded on first aid still yet. As we do this, we will begin to work our way into other areas of the Rule of 3's.
1. Sewing Needle. Having a sewing needle is essential when having to rely on your own skills. Keeping synthetic needles handy is best, however, not always practical. Keeping sewing needles in a small pill bottle or other form of capsule can make them much easier to store. When selecting synthetic sewing needles, one must take into consideration all that it may have to be used for. Flexibility, durability, strength, and break point should all be considered when searching for sufficient sewing needles.
